Q:
Where are Gaboon Vipers
From?
a: Gaboon Vipers are
an African Snake Species.
They are a highly venomous
snake species and are known
to have the longest fangs
of any snake species.
Q:
How Venomous are Gaboon Vipers?
a: Gaboon Vipers are
an extremely venomous snake
species. Although they may
appear slow and sluggish
they are basically one big
muscle and can strike at
an incredible speed. They
should only be kept by highly
experienced snake keepers
or zoo's and educational
institutions.
Q:
Are
they easy to keep in captivity?
a:
Gaboon Vipers do fairly
well in captivity. If you
are looking to acquire one
we highly recommend purchasing
a captive bred snake. Keep
in mind that many States
and Provinces require you
to have a venomous snake
license in order to lawfully
keep this species in captivity.
It is also highly recommended
to have anti-venom on hand
just in case you are ever
bitten.
Q:
What do Gaboon Vipers Eat?
a: Juvenile Gaboon
Vipers will feed on a large
pinky or fuzzy mouse about
once per week. Adults should
be fed an appropriately
sized prey item (adult mouse
or small rat) every two
or three weeks.
Q:
What items will I need to purchase
to house a snake comfortably?
a: Before purchasing
a snake from a respected
snake shop we highly recommend
reading about the species
and learning if it will
be right for you. Our Gaboon
Viper Care Guide is the
perfect start and even includes
handy plans for building
a custom professional looking
display enclosure for your
snake. Along with this information
the main items you will
need are: Information, a
suitably sized enclosure,
a water dish, suitable substrate
for the enclosure, a hiding
area within the enclosure
(that your snake can completely
fit inside), a reptile light
source, under tank heater
(if necessary), a temperature
gauge, and feeding
hemostats. Since the Gaboon
Viper is a highly venomous
species we recommend that
your tank is lockable and
completely escape proof.
It is also highly recommended
that you do not ever handle
this species. |
